Inter - Observer Reliability

چکیده

Just as scientific records can be vulnerable to variation between different pieces of recording equipment, so observational records are subject to differences in how observers score behaviour. However one can judge how much confidence to place in one's results by assessing the reliability of the records of one's variables. In this paper we shall consider only inter-observer reliability or scorer reliability (ANASTASI, i968) of direct observation of discrete events, however it should be remembered that observer differences are not the only source of error in observational studies. Indeed the amount of variation that is treated as error will depend on the aim of the study. For example, if an experimenter assumes that repeated observational measures within a short time interval should be consistent, he needs to assess both the error due to variation in subjects over time as well as the error due to observer differences. Inter-observer reliability is an estimate of the latter error only, although the methods of its calculation outlined in this paper are applicable to other types of reliability (see ANASTASI, i1968, for further discussion). Inter-observer reliability is often reported simply as a figure or a percentage with little or no explanation of how the figure was derived. For example, in a recent volume of a well known journal concerned with studies of children, out of the I4 papers using observational data, only six reported clearly how they had derived the reliability figures, and these six included at least three different methods; three gave only a bare figure which could have been derived in a number of different ways; the remaining five papers gave a description of their methods that was in some way ambiguous, or quoted

How to Assess Inter-Observer Reliability of Ratings Made on Ordinal Scales: Evaluating and Comparing the Emergency Severity Index (Version 3) and Canadian Triage Acuity Scale

An exact, optimal (“maximum-accuracy”) psychometric methodology for assessing inter-observer reliability for measures involving ordinal ratings is used to evaluate and compare two emergency medicine triage algorithms—both of which classify patients into one of five ordinal categories. Ten raters independently evaluated the identical set of 200 patients, five with each algorithm. Analysis reveal...

A comparison of the validity and reliability between a digital radiographic imaging system and manual method in measuring the Cobb angle

Methods Twenty adolescents with scoliotic curvatures were chosen to participate in the study based on convenience, without predilection for gender, age, type or location. Images of the curvatures were examined by 15 trained observers to estimate the Cobb angle variability, as well as intraand inter-observer variations. Each image was measured three times at a minimum interval of one week betwee...

A multicentre study on the reliability of qualitative and quantitative nail-fold videocapillaroscopy assessment.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the inter- and intra-observer reliability of both qualitative and quantitative parameters used in the assessment of nail-fold capillaroscopy images. METHODS Fifty mosaic nail-fold images of healthy controls (n = 10), patients with primary RP (n = 10) and SSc (n = 30) were assessed in random order by two blinded observers on two occasions at centres in Sweden, UK and T...

Is it time to revisit the AO classification of fractures of the distal radius? Inter- and intra-observer reliability of the AO classification.

We conducted an observational radiographic study to determine the inter- and intra-observer reliability of the AO classification of fractures of the distal radius. Plain posteroanterior and lateral radiographs of 456 patients with an acute fracture of the distal radius were classified by a consultant orthopaedic hand specialist and two specialist trainees, and the k coefficient for the inter- a...

Scoring of Hand Eczema: Good Reliability of Hand Eczema Extent Score (HEES).

There is good agreement between dermatological staff and patients using the Hand Eczema Extent Score (HEES). The aim of this study was to assess inter- and intra-observer reliability of the HEES in dermatologists and intra-observer reliability of the HEES in patients with hand eczema. Six dermatologists assessed 18 patients twice. Only the hands of the patients were visible to the assessors. Pa...
